    Nerdly Help?
So I just installed Service Pack 2 for XP so I could use some new hardware, and it went on an application fuckup spree! The the exe files are still there, but it's trying to open them with DOS. I am just BEYOND confused here. I don't have to reinstall all this software, redownload dozens of gigs worth of games and software. And these are perfectly legal, paid for apps! What the...what...CHRIST!

    Among the fucked up apps:

    Avast Antivirus
    Doom 3
Steam (And Several Half-Life Related Games)
Half the Sam and Max games

    Late night melancholy
Well, I have a little time today right now to post...

It's been pretty much a busy busy summer, and this is bad for my last goal - Improve on drawing.

For one to be a good artist, it takes lots of time, practice and sacrifice. All of which i cannot be able to do for the time being. This is bad, because by the time I can pick up a pencil at this rate, my skills are probably going to turn to shit, because of how long it has been.

There's lot to blame i guess. My new job tires me out so much that I'm practically asleep.. there's so much construction that needs done in the house, that i'm stuck doing the work.. and then, my fault, is the fact I don't want to be lonely and invest time in social life. Pretty much, I can't fit in any time for practice in any of that crap.

Something does have to go, but do i have the emotions willing to separate from society just to produce something decent? I don't know if i can deal with it.. but.. i have to try, just for the sake of actually being an artist. I mean, all the crap i make, it's not art, it's nothing at all. there's no context, no passion, nothing that takes the viewer into an interest, and most of all, it's not what i want to produce, it's not what i want to make. Everything that I can think of never comes out, and instead is some bastard unlovable jpg that i just slap on flickr for the sake of it all. There are times i got the opportunity of a critique, but i end up busy to change things, and eventually i;m already detached to the work to give a fuck about the piece, scrap it and pretend it never existed.

I guess the only time i feel happy with art so far, is being recognized in college a bit - although it's graphic design and not fine arts. I get some really good grades with the projects i do. Pretty much the thing that i really really enjoyed was Page Five of a fontbook i made. I just love the simplicity here i did. Anyways, everything else i do for the program is just based on what i get, i just turn it and make something out of it.

However, personal art... it's not going so great. besides the two Munnys i painted on, I don't love any of my works.

    I don't know.

I need to force myself to be a good artist... otherwise i have nothing. I feel that in order to bring about change.. something has to give. In order to keep up with practice and necessary learning.. I think i have to rid of most human contact...

I'm sad today. I hadn't felt like this in months. i hate this feeling... worse off, there isn't anyone i can talk to about this, because it seems like their own bias gets in the way of potential solutions.

    I'm going to bed.

    Obligatory Post-AC Post
Wow. My tenth AC. My tenth AC. My tenth consecutive AC.

I really respect--and envy--those who are able to give hour-by-hour recollections of the good time they had at Anthrocon 2008. I am not such a person, however, but I do want to highlight a few things.

To all the friends old and new I was able to connect with this year: I was thrilled to see all of you, and whether it was for a few passing moments or for hours at a time, it wasn't nearly enough time.

To all the artists I was able to talk to and collect art from: I can't thank you enough for obliging this perpetual fanboy. Collecting art is a big part of why I go to AC, and you all rock! I am only sorry I wasn't able to commission sketches from everyone I wanted to.

To Kage and the staff and volunteers of Anthrocon: Again, a fantastic job this year--you all make it look so easy...and I know it isn't.

To the Dorsai Irregulars: I had the unique opportunity to talk with some of you folks this year, and my respect for what you do has gone up exponentially. When the average view of a security person is that of a brainless thug, all of you show it can be done effectively with grace and compassion. Thank you for not allowing the few whiners and buttholes from keeping you from coming back year after year!

And as always, my heartfelt thanks to [info]tchall for his hospitality, and for putting me up (and putting up with me) before and after the con.

Excellent AC, as always! Let's do it again next year. o(:o)

    Anime Meh-xpo
That was quicker than I thought.

-When the first surprise you get at a con is the $20 parking fee for the convention center, the day isn't going well. If you decide to go to the con, park in the non-state lots north of the convention center, which were charging around $6 to $7. It's a few minutes walk, but exercise is good for you lardass.

-The best deal in the cafeteria at the LACC is cereal and milk. $2.45, which is almost tolerable. Otherwise, eat out.

-One plus for the con with the new prereg system. Took less than 20 minutes from going into the hall to walking out with badge and swag bag.

-One minus for putting the line for the exhibi hall outside the building in 80 degree heat, when the LACC is loaded with empty air-conditioned halls that could have been used instead. Whatever dog-fucking shitgobbler came up with that one needs to be set on fire and tossed off the top of Staples Center.

-I spent more time in line to get into the exhibit hall than I did inside the thing. I entered at 12:30 and was on the road home by 2 PM. The problem is that 80% of the dealers are selling in one of three categories: manga, DVDs, and toys. And in those categories, they were all selling THE SAME SHIT. "Well, the last six tables were selling Naruto episodes, let's see what's over here. Why, it's Naruto episodes!"

-There were three booths I did more than just walk past:
    1. Hornsmythe. Calvin's an acquaintence of mine, and he does some of the West Coast furcons. Great stuff for sale. Clothes, hand-crafted horn items, small metal things. I dropped by to wave hello and he barely had time to wave back, since he was going the kind of land office business that eluded his neighbors. Good for him.
    2. VG Cats. I wish I'd have remembered to bring my small sketchbook for him to work in. Ah well. Another person who was busy when all around him were not.
    3. Tea Club. Same here. Might have had something to do with all the great stuff she has for sale that's new. New things, what a concept!

-The anime implosion is going on bigtime. Tokyopop was absent, ADV had a handful of tables instead of that huge display of theirs, and most of the big names except Bandai were running smaller booths. Fire sales seemed to be the order of the day, and many dealers seemed scared. This is what happens when you grab anything and everything from Japan and plop it on a disc or between covers. You flood the market, then you get to sit back and blame fansubbers for it falling apart. lulz.

All in all it was money mostly wasted. Next year I will get an exhibit only pass, park well away from the convention center, bring a lunch, bring a portable seat, and laugh at all the attempts by Asians to cosplay an Italian plumber.

TF2 is uninstalled and shoved to the farthest, darkest corner I can find in my closet. IF I touch the game again (and that's a big IF), it'll be at least a year from now, when they release all the updates.

Can anybody suggest another, hopefully fun game to play?

    NikoCon 2008: Epilogue..
With [info]prismo's departure this afternoon, the fantastic furball that was playfully dubbed 'NikoCon' came to an end. I'm still just sitting in the glow of having my close friends with me for up to ten wonderful days.

"And I want video of ALL of it!"

Wewcum to Homestah wunnah dot kawm!

    Apparently this last AC,

A few people drew me on a napkin so I could go to dinner with them. Thanks guys. That is one of the sweetest/dorkiest things I have ever heard of.

That is freaking adorable. Does anyone have the napkin for a scan?

    I miss you guys.
Guess we'll just have to make this next FC kick more ass to make up for my absence.

    Computer Failing
Well, the age of my current system is finally starting to show. I built this beast in 2002, and it has been holding up rather well up until now. Over the years I've given it several upgrades, from more ram to better graphics cards, and even better power supplies.

But at present I think the motherboard is finally failing. That, or the processor is. Either way, the moment I put too much strain on the system, it reboots. Some days I can play a fairly graphical game without issues, others like today even an older game causes it to crash and restart within a few minutes. So, my use of this PC is becoming more and more limited. I wouldn't be surprised if both the Motherboard and Processor were failing, as they're the only components that have not been replaced over the years.

To top it all off, the computer is running really slowly. It takes longer than usual to boot up, programs take a lot of time to load once the computer has been turned on, yadda. 'tis a fresh install of the whole system too. I had noticed it was going tits up on me earlier, and wiped it clean for a fresh start. That improved things for a little while, but it very quickly came back to its nearly-dead point.

I've known I needed a new computer for a while now, I just wish the thing would hold on a little longer. :p I don't exactly have the spare cash right now for a PC. I might just suck it up and get a Dell notebook or something, as my old Laptop is dead too. Heh, I bought that thing back in 2001! I doubt I'll spring for some ultra fancy gaming notebook. Basically I'd want something that can do what my current PC can, minus the crashing of course. At least with dell I can get on their payment plans, so that's affordable. Too bad they don't seem to be offering any computers with Windows XP anymore. I really really REALLY hate vista. Such a bloated and useless OS.

None but the gaming notebooks can match my PC for graphics card potency, but I can live with that. Half the trouble with my current PC was not the graphics, but simply that it couldn't keep up in terms of ram or processing power. I figure a simple notebook with a dual core, and a few gigs o' ram will serve me well. Plus, I'll still have the thing for traveling even when I get a proper gaming PC put together again.

I suppose I'll just have to wait n' see what shows up. If I find a good job soon I'll skip the notebook and go right to building a gamer PC again. Either way, hopefully the computer holds together long enough for me to replace it. The last thing I want is to be sitting here without computer access. :p

    To B. Shoop
I got your voice mail. I'm typing the response on here because you're rarely online much and, for some reason, I don't feel like calling you. Waking up is hard. Yea, I'm all up for something like that. The film is really dragging its feet because my actors work all the time and are far away. Right now, I started the side-side-project with a guy named Andy in Cali. I'm filming bits here and sending the files to him and then he's gonna film his parts there and edit the two together. It's not a huge thing and is really not all that time consuming so a side-side-side project is just what I need right now.
